The United Arab Emirates' senior national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan is visiting Iran today. He has met with President Ebrahim Raisi and with his counterpart Ali Shamkhani. Shamkhani said "Stability and security can only be established through continuous dialogue and cooperation between the regional countries". The two countries have been on opposite sides regarding the conflict in Yemen with Iran backing the Houthi insurgent rebel fighters while the United Arab Emirates backs the internationally recognised government. Shamkhani further said "Improving economic, trade and investment ties are the main priorities of Iran's foreign policy". This comes amid tough negotiations regarding the lifting of sanctions for the curbing of Iran's nuclear program. It remains unclear just how the United Arab Emirates and Iran can cooperate when the two have such conflicting foreign policies.
