The COVID-19 variant, first discovered in South Africa, has been dubbed Omicron. The variant shows a number of mutations and the vaccines could prove ineffective against it. Countries are reacting quickly. Thailand on Shabbos announced that it is banning arrivals from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka on Shabbos announced it is banning arrivals from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho and Eswatini. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed officials on Shabbos to review plans to ease travel restrictions. As two cases have been detected in the United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Shabbos that "We will require anyone who enters the UK to take a PCR test by the end of the second day after their arrival and to self-isolate until they have a negative result".
